Aren't Wood Canoes Fragile?
They used to be. Although obviously heavier than kevlar, they are lighter than aluminum, and much lighter than canvas covered canoes. The fragile reputation started in the 1950's with the use of polyester resins. Those resins hardened the fiberglass, but did not bond well with the wood. The result was that a good "bump" would delaminate the canoe. Modern epoxy resin bonds to the wood, creating an incredibly tough hull. Epoxy resins have been used on the smallest canoes to the largest seagoing yachts. Although not quite indestructible, they are definitely not fragile. We use only West Systems® brand epoxy, the leader in marine epoxy technology.
